Murray Hill’s Best Places to Eat

After living in Murray Hill for ten years, a neighborhood in NYC, I’ve come to learn all the best restaurants in the area. In this guide, I’ll share with you some of my favorites. One of the best parts about NYC is having so many different options in such a small area.

Japanese restaurants are all over the area. There are several blocks with more than one Japanese restaurant. My favorite place is Chado Sushi, which is fairly new. This place has an incredible Omakase (chef’s selection) and uses some of the best sauces around. The chef came from Sushi of Gari, so I’m not surprised it’s so tasty!

If you’re in the mood for some greasy food, there’s Carl’s Cheesesteaks. Over the past five years, Philly cheesesteaks have become more and more popular. Their signature sandwich, which consists of steak on a hero with cheese whiz and onions, is the cure for any hangover. Read more

Sushi in Vancouver

Vancouver is a west coast town. Like many other cities on the west coast of North America, Vancouver has a large Japanese population. Japanese immigration has played a large role in the history of the city, and with this immigration has come a fusion of Canadian and Japanese culture. Without a doubt, Sushi is quite a popular food in North America. While it is now pretty much ubiquitous, even staple, in most cities on the continent the Sushi we have come to adore has its roots on the west coast, particularly in Los Angeles and Vancouver. The well known California roll and the B.C roll play homage to this history. As one would expect, Vancouver has a wide variety of excellent sushi restaurants. These restaurants all have an authentic feel, as they use fresh ingredients from the Pacific and traditional Japanese recipes. Read more

As a foodie living in Murray Hill (which consists of the East 30′s in NYC), I felt the need to share some of the areas best places to grab a bite or take home some grub. There are so many different places to choose from and if you’re not familiar with the neighborhood, you may end up wasting your time on something average.

Let’s start with Japanese food. Chado Sushi has recently opened in the area and is superb. Unfortunately, it is expensive but it’s darn tasty! The partner/executive chef formerly worked at Sushi of Gari, which is one of the best in NYC. So by no surprise, expect great things. They’re known for their sauces they use and their Omikase, so take a chance and try out whatever the chef suggests. Read more

Flying Fish – Cairo Seafood Out of This World

Flying Fish is located on a lonely stretch of El Nil Street in Agouza, without any neighbours (alas!) and looking highly suspect. However, those in the know have been coming back to this Cairo institution for years, ignoring the nondescript exterior and neon sign for the refined service and brick, brass and leather undersea motif that’s half 1930s smoking room, half art deco. Definitely a rarity, this restaurant even has its own live crooner, belting out smooth classics in Arabic, and now makes our list of places to come back to as well.

The waiter wasn’t rattled at all when we pestered him to fill in all the details that the menu didn’t, and he courteously described all the dishes until we settled on the amazing Flying Fish soup (20LE), raw oysters and grilled oysters with celery and garlic (normally 30LE for twelve of either, he kindly offered us six of each), a fantastic green salad (6LE), and one main of grilled fish fillet (27LE) with a side of browned rice (5LE). Located in the heart of North Carolina is the flourishing city of Charlotte. “The Queen City” is the largest city in North Carolina and is well-known for its quickly advancing metropolitan area. In the last twenty years, Charlotte has seen the establishment and success of their football team, The Carolina Panthers, two different basketball organizations and recently, the opening of America’s first ever NASCAR Hall of Fame. With “The Queen City” mostly known for its sport venues and enchanting nightlife, many overlook one of the most important things when it comes to the reputation of a city, their food.
