Vancouver is a west coast town. Like many other cities on the west coast of North America, Vancouver has a large Japanese population. Japanese immigration has played a large role in the history of the city, and with this immigration has come a fusion of Canadian and Japanese culture. Without a doubt, Sushi is quite a popular food in North America. While it is now pretty much ubiquitous, even staple, in most cities on the continent the Sushi we have come to adore has its roots on the west coast, particularly in Los Angeles and Vancouver. The well known California roll and the B.C roll play homage to this history. As one would expect, Vancouver has a wide variety of excellent sushi restaurants. These restaurants all have an authentic feel, as they use fresh ingredients from the Pacific and traditional Japanese recipes. Read more

By Andrew Mulligin

In 1918 Save the Redwoods League was created to rescue examples of primaeval redwood forests and to co-operate with state and national officials in creating redwood parks. One of its first actions was to recommend to Congress the establishment of a Redwood National Park. The park was not created until 1968. Meanwhile the league was purchasing land with old-growth redwoods for state parks. It has to date donated over $55 million to protect some 260,000 acres of Redwood land, of which 422 acres are now in the National Park.

As created in 1968, the National Park covered only 30,000 acres of federal land. It included the world’s tallest tree, a 367 foot redwood beside Redwood Creek, and it took in three state parks: Jedediah Smith, Del Norte Coast, and Prairie Creek. However, it did not contain enough land to protect the Redwood Creek and Mill Creek watersheds. In 1978, Congress passed the National Parks expansion act, adding 48,000 acres, including lands essential to the Redwood Creek watershed. The legislation was groundbreaking in that it allotted $33 million for restoration as well as funds for purchase. Read more

The Red Room inside Pure caters to celebrities and captures a sense of luxury and refined style in a hideaway secluded from the main nightclub. As a foodie living in Murray Hill (which consists of the East 30′s in NYC), I felt the need to share some of the areas best places to grab a bite or take home some grub. There are so many different places to choose from and if you’re not familiar with the neighborhood, you may end up wasting your time on something average.

Let’s start with Japanese food. Chado Sushi has recently opened in the area and is superb. Unfortunately, it is expensive but it’s darn tasty! The partner/executive chef formerly worked at Sushi of Gari, which is one of the best in NYC. So by no surprise, expect great things. They’re known for their sauces they use and their Omikase, so take a chance and try out whatever the chef suggests. Read more
